How Kg to Lbs Conversion Is Calculated
A kilogram is the base unit of mass in the metric system. A pound is the everyday weight unit in the United States and is still common in the UK. If you have a weight in kilograms and need it for a gym, an airline bag or a baby scale, this tool gives you the pounds.
What Kg to Lbs Conversion Measures
It changes the unit, not the weight. 70 kg and 154.32 lbs are the same mass written two ways. The kilogram is now defined from a fixed value of the Planck constant, so it no longer depends on a physical object¹.
The Formula
The pound has been defined as 0.45359237 kilograms since 1959, when national standards laboratories in English-speaking countries agreed on one value²,³.
Pounds = kilograms / 0.45359237
Pounds = kilograms x 2.20462262185 (rounded)
Because the pound is defined in kilograms, 0.45359237 is exact. Dividing 1 by it gives a number that never ends, so 2.20462262185 is a rounded value.
How This Calculator Computes Your Result
Type a weight in kilograms, with a dot or a comma for decimals (3,5 is 3.5). A comma before exactly three digits is a thousands separator, so 1,000 is one thousand. The tool divides by 0.45359237 and rounds only at the end. Pounds show to 2 decimals by default (you can pick 0 to 4). For the pounds and ounces view, the total ounces are rounded to 1 decimal first and then split into pounds and ounces, so a weight just under 2 lbs shows as 2 lb 0.0 oz, not 1 lb 16.0 oz. One pound is 16 ounces. Weights from 0.01 kg to 1,000 kg are accepted.
What Your Result Means
The result is your weight in pounds, plus the same weight as whole pounds and ounces. Here are common gym values, using a 20 kg bar with one plate on each side.
Plate (kg) | Plate (lbs) | Loaded bar (kg) | Loaded bar (lbs) |
2.5 | 5.51 | 25 | 55.12 |
5 | 11.02 | 30 | 66.14 |
10 | 22.05 | 40 | 88.18 |
20 | 44.09 | 60 | 132.28 |
25 | 55.12 | 70 | 154.32 |
Quick Reference: 1 to 150 Kg
Kilograms | Pounds | Pounds and ounces |
1 | 2.20 | 2 lb 3.3 oz |
2 | 4.41 | 4 lb 6.5 oz |
5 | 11.02 | 11 lb 0.4 oz |
10 | 22.05 | 22 lb 0.7 oz |
20 | 44.09 | 44 lb 1.5 oz |
25 | 55.12 | 55 lb 1.8 oz |
40 | 88.18 | 88 lb 3.0 oz |
50 | 110.23 | 110 lb 3.7 oz |
70 | 154.32 | 154 lb 5.2 oz |
100 | 220.46 | 220 lb 7.4 oz |
120 | 264.55 | 264 lb 8.9 oz |
150 | 330.69 | 330 lb 11.1 oz |
As a sanity check, the answer in pounds should be a little over 2.2 times the kilograms. If it is close to the same number or double it, the units were probably mixed up.

Gym Plates and Barbells
Powerlifting rules set the bar and collars together at 25 kg, with each collar at 2.5 kg, which leaves 20 kg for the bar⁴. Plates are color coded: 15 kg yellow, 20 kg blue and 25 kg red⁴. A 20 kg bar is 44.09 lbs. A bar sold as 45 lbs is 20.41 kg, so the two are close but not the same. A 25 kg plate is 55.12 lbs, not 55.
Luggage, Weight Classes and Baby Weights
One large US airline lists checked bags at 50 lbs / 23 kgs⁵. In fact 23 kg is 50.71 lbs, and 50 lbs is 22.68 kg. Powerlifting men's weight classes are set in kilograms, for example 74 kg (163.14 lbs), 83 kg (182.98 lbs) and 93 kg (205.03 lbs)⁴. For babies, pounds and ounces is the common US view. A 3.5 kg baby is 7.72 lbs, or 7 lb 11.5 oz.
Why Many People Use 2.2, and What It Costs
Multiplying by 2.2 is easy to do in your head. But 2.2 is about 0.21% lower than the true factor of 2.20462, and the gap grows with weight. 20 kg gives 44.00 instead of 44.09 lbs. 70 kg gives 154.00 instead of 154.32. 100 kg gives 220.00 instead of 220.46, which is about 7 oz short. For a rough check, 2.2 is fine. For a bag limit or a weigh-in, use the full factor.
Why Health Measures Use Kilograms
The CDC defines BMI as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared⁶. A weight given in pounds has to be converted to kilograms before it goes into that formula, which is the reverse of this page.
A Note on Accuracy
The factor 0.45359237 is defined, not measured, so the conversion is exact. Rounding only happens in the display: pounds show to the number of decimals you pick (2 by default), and the pounds and ounces view rounds to 0.1 oz. Using 2.2 instead of the full factor gives an answer about 0.21% low. Real differences come from scales, clothing and the time of day, not from the math.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many pounds is 1 kg?
1 kilogram is about 2.20462 pounds, or 2 lb 3.3 oz.
How do you convert kg to lbs?
Divide the kilograms by 0.45359237, or multiply by 2.20462. For example, 70 kg x 2.20462 = 154.32 lbs.
Is multiplying by 2.2 accurate enough?
It runs about 0.21% low, which is 0.46 lbs at 100 kg. That is fine for a rough check but not for a weight limit.
How much is 20 kg in pounds?
20 kg is 44.09 lbs, or 44 lb 1.5 oz. This is the weight of a standard powerlifting competition barbell.
