How Body Mass Index (BMI) Is Calculated
BMI, or Body Mass Index, is a number calculated from your height and weight that places you into a general weight category linked to health risk. It's the same basic measurement used in doctor's offices, public health research, and international health guidelines. Here's exactly how it's calculated and how to read your result.
What BMI Measures
BMI is a screening tool, not a body composition test. It does not measure body fat directly, and it cannot tell the difference between fat and muscle.
The Formula
For users working in metric units:
BMI = weight in kilograms ÷ (height in meters)²
For users working in imperial units:
BMI = [weight in pounds ÷ (height in inches)²] × 703
The 703 in the imperial formula converts pounds and inches into the same units the metric formula produces, so your BMI comes out the same either way. Why the Cutoffs Differ for Some Populations
These ranges were built mostly from European and North American data. A WHO review found that several Asian populations face higher health risk at lower BMI levels than the standard cutoff of 25⁴. A Note on Accuracy
BMI cannot tell fat from muscle.
