How Grams to Pounds Conversion Is Calculated
A gram is a metric unit of mass. A pound is a US customary unit, and it is the one most Americans use for food, groceries and body weight. Converting between them takes one exact number, so the answer is never an estimate.
What Grams to Pounds Conversion Measures
This tool changes the unit, not the weight. 3,400 grams and 7 lb 7.9 oz are the same mass written two ways. It is built for small amounts, such as a 250 g bag of coffee, a 28 g serving or a newborn weighing 3,400 g.
The Formula
The avoirdupois pound is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, which is 453.59237 grams¹. There are 16 ounces in a pound, so one ounce is exactly 28.349523125 grams².
Pounds = grams / 453.59237
Ounces = grams / 28.349523125
The pound was fixed at this value after English-speaking nations agreed in 1958 to unify their standards of length and mass, with the new factors announced in 1959³.
How This Calculator Computes Your Result
Type a weight in grams. Decimals are fine. Nothing is rounded until the last step. Pounds show to 4 decimals and ounces to 2 decimals. The pounds and ounces line rounds total ounces to 1 decimal first (2 decimals under 1 oz), then splits them, so 453 g reads 1 lb 0.0 oz and never 0 lb 16.0 oz. A nearest whole ounce line is also shown for a scale-style reading. The swap button flips the tool to convert pounds and ounces back to grams.
What Your Result Means
Your result is the same mass in US units. Use these common amounts to check your answer.
Grams | Pounds | Ounces | Pounds and ounces |
28 | 0.0617 | 0.99 | 0.99 oz |
50 | 0.1102 | 1.76 | 1.8 oz |
100 | 0.2205 | 3.53 | 3.5 oz |
250 | 0.5512 | 8.82 | 8.8 oz |
454 | 1.0009 | 16.01 | 1 lb 0.0 oz |
500 | 1.1023 | 17.64 | 1 lb 1.6 oz |
1,000 | 2.2046 | 35.27 | 2 lb 3.3 oz |
2,500 | 5.5116 | 88.18 | 5 lb 8.2 oz |
3,500 | 7.7162 | 123.46 | 7 lb 11.5 oz |
Decimal Pounds Are Not Pounds and Ounces
This is the most common mistake. A result of 7.4957 lb does not mean 7 lb 4.957 oz. The part after the decimal point is a fraction of a pound, and a pound has 16 ounces. So 0.4957 x 16 gives 7.9 oz, and 3,400 g is 7 lb 7.9 oz. For a birth weight, use the pounds and ounces line.
Why 28 Grams Is Not Exactly One Ounce
On US food labels, FDA guidance says 1 oz in weight means 28 g⁴. The exact value is 28.3495 g. A label that says 1 oz (28 g) is about 1.2 percent lighter than a true ounce. The difference is tiny for one serving but adds up over a large pack. Label values are also rounded: the metric amount after a household measure is given in grams, and quantities of 5 g or more are rounded to a whole number⁵.
How Grams Appear on a US Nutrition Label
The serving size is shown in a household measure, such as 1 cup, followed by the metric amount in parentheses. Foods other than fluids use grams⁵. Total fat is stated to the nearest 0.5 g below 5 g, and a serving with less than 0.5 g of fat is stated as zero. Carbohydrate and protein are stated to the nearest gram, and under 0.5 g may be listed as zero⁵. So a label showing 0 g can still hold a small amount. This converter treats whatever number you enter as exact.
Birth Weight in Grams and Pounds
Birth weight limits are defined in grams, while many US families think in pounds and ounces. The World Health Organization defines low birth weight as a weight at birth of less than 2,500 g, which it equates to 5.5 lb⁶. By exact conversion, 2,500 g is 5 lb 8.2 oz. The US figure was 8.52 percent of births in 2024⁷. This tool only converts the unit and does not assess a baby's health.
A Note on Accuracy
The conversion is exact, because the pound and ounce are defined values and not measured ones. The only rounding is in the display. Real differences come from the scale you used, label rounding, and the container or packaging you weighed with the food.
