How Calories Burned Playing Golf Are Calculated

Calories burned playing golf is the energy you use to walk the course, swing, and stand between shots. The biggest factors are your body weight, how long you are out there, and whether you walk or ride.

What Golf Calorie Estimates Measure

Every bit of energy you use on the course is counted, even what your body would burn at rest anyway (a gross figure). It does not track your steps, heart rate, or swing count.

The Formula

Calories (kcal) = MET x body weight (kg) x time (hours)

1 MET = about 1 kcal per kg of body weight per hour

A MET compares an activity with sitting still. Golf values on this page are from the 2024 Adult Compendium of Physical Activities, a reference list of energy costs for adults aged 19 to 59¹.

How This Calculator Computes Your Result

Pick your age group and how you play golf, then enter your weight in pounds or kilograms and your time. The "9 holes" and "18 holes" buttons fill in 2 or 4 hours, which you can change. From there, the calculator converts your weight to kilograms and multiplies it by the MET for your type of golf and your time. The tool rounds to the nearest 5 kcal and gives the MET to one decimal place.

The compendium lists carrying slightly below pulling, and the range and mini golf share one entry¹.

The result shows your total, your calories per hour and per 30 minutes, and a table of all four ways to play golf at your weight. Golfers under 18 get no number, because youth energy values differ. At 60 and over you get the same adult values with a note that your burn may be lower. The Older Adult Compendium lists walking golf with a pull cart at 4.3 on its own scale, which uses a lower resting rate, so it is shown as context only².

Split my session (optional). Add range warm-up minutes (counted at the range value), on-course minutes, and long breaks such as a halfway house stop or lunch between nines (left out). Golf results from the split are marked "active time only". Do not subtract normal waiting between shots, since that is part of playing a round.

What Your Result Means

The figure shows what that golf outing used, not a goal to reach. A 70 kg (154 lb) golfer burns about this much:

Type of golf

1 hour

9 holes (2 hours)

18 holes (4 hours)

Walking, pull or push cart

315 kcal

630 kcal

1260 kcal

Walking, carrying clubs

600 kcal

1205 kcal

Riding a power cart

245 kcal

490 kcal

980 kcal

An hour at the driving range or on a mini golf course is also about 245 kcal at this weight. Measured rounds vary a lot: studies of 18 holes report anywhere from about 530 to 2,470 kcal³.

What Changes Your Burn on the Golf Course

Walking or riding. This is the biggest choice you make. Golfers walking 18 holes averaged 11,948 steps in a pedometer study of 42 players on three courses⁴. Across studies, walking a round covers about 4 to 8 miles, while riding a cart cuts it to around 6,280 steps³. For a 70 kg golfer, walking with a pull cart instead of riding adds about 280 kcal over a 4 hour round.

Hills. You might expect a hilly course to cost much more. In a study of 66 golfers wearing GPS and heart rate monitors, a round on a hilly course and a flat course cost almost the same, about 830 kcal⁵.

Body size and sex. In the same study, men used about 926 kcal per round and women about 556⁵. Because calories scale with weight, your own weight matters more than any average.

Pace and waiting. In an R&A survey of golfers worldwide, the average 18 hole round took 3 hours 56 minutes, with regional averages from 3:44 to 4:09⁶. A backed-up course adds time without adding much work, which is what the split helper is for.

Golf and Your Health

A large scoping review of golf research found that golf is usually moderate intensity, with an average of about 4.5 METs across studies³. A Swedish study of 300,818 golfers found a 40% lower death rate than non-golfers, about 5 extra years of life, though this kind of study cannot prove golf caused it³. The review also links golf to better balance and muscle endurance in older adults³.

Two risks are worth knowing. Studies that measured sun exposure found golfers at greater risk of skin cancer, and the lower back is the most commonly injured area in amateur golfers³.

Walking golf burns a little more per hour than a 3 mph walk and the same as tennis doubles. The compendium has no adult pickleball value, so that row is a stand-in. Golf's edge is time: a four hour round often beats a shorter, harder workout on total calories.

A Note on Accuracy

Golf is hard to measure because so much of a round is standing, waiting, and short walks between shots. Published values range from 2.5 to 8.0 METs, depending on the course, the pace, and who is playing³. The heart rate study above even rated golf as light, at about 2.2 to 2.8 METs, which is lower than the compendium⁵. Fitness matters too: studies found golf more intense for golfers with lower fitness, and for heavier and older players³. Treat the result as a fair estimate for a typical round, not an exact count.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many calories do you burn playing 18 holes of golf?

A 70 kg (154 lb) golfer burns about 1,200 to 1,260 kcal walking 18 holes in 4 hours, and about 980 kcal riding a cart¹. Heavier golfers and slower rounds give higher totals.

Does golf count as exercise?

Yes. Most studies rate golf as moderate intensity, averaging about 4.5 METs, and walking 18 holes usually means over 10,000 steps³ ⁴.

Do you burn more calories walking or using a golf cart?

Walking burns more, about 4.3 to 4.5 METs against 3.5 for a power cart¹. Over a 4 hour round that is roughly 220 to 280 extra kcal for a 70 kg golfer.

How accurate is a golf calorie calculator?

It gives a reasonable average for a typical round. Studies show real rounds range widely, from about 530 to 2,470 kcal for 18 holes, so your own number may differ³.
