How Calories Burned Bowling Are Calculated
Calories burned bowling is the energy you use to walk the approach, swing the ball, and move around between turns. The main factors are your body weight, how long you bowl, and which kind of bowling you play.
What Bowling Calorie Estimates Measure
The estimate counts all the energy you use while bowling, including what your body would burn at rest anyway (a gross figure). It does not track your score, ball speed, steps or heart rate.
The Formula
Calories (kcal) = MET x body weight (kg) x time (hours)
1 MET = about 1 kcal per kg of body weight per hour
One MET is the energy you use sitting quietly, and every other value is a multiple of it. The bowling values come from the 2024 Adult Compendium of Physical Activities, a reference list of energy costs for adults aged 19 to 59¹.
How This Calculator Computes Your Result
Choose your age group and type of bowling, then enter your weight in pounds or kilograms. For your time, pick one of three ways:
Whole session: the hours and minutes you were on the lane.
By games: the number of games and how many minutes one game takes you. There is no standard game length, because it depends on how many people share your lane, so you enter your own.
Split my session: your bowling minutes and any long breaks, such as a meal, the bar, or waiting for a lane. Breaks are left out and the result is marked "active time only". Do not subtract the normal wait between your turns, since that is part of bowling.
Type of bowling | Compendium code | MET |
Tenpin at a bowling alley | 15092 | 3.8 |
Lawn bowls or bocce, outdoor | 15465 | 3.3 |
Bowling, general | 15090 | 3.0 |
The compendium has no separate league value, so league nights use the bowling alley value¹. "Bowling, general" is an older, broader entry with a lower figure.
Results are rounded to the nearest 5 kcal (nearest 1 under 50 kcal). You see your total, calories per hour and per 30 minutes, calories per game in games mode, and a table of all three types at your weight. Anyone under 18 sees a note instead of a number, since children and teens are covered by separate youth values. At 60 and over you get adult values with a note that your burn may be lower, since the Older Adult Compendium lists no real bowling, only video game bowling².
What Your Result Means
Your result shows what that session used, not a target. Here is what the options come to for someone weighing 70 kg (154 lb):
Type of bowling | 30 minutes | 1 hour | 2 hours |
Tenpin at a bowling alley | 135 kcal | 265 kcal | 530 kcal |
Lawn bowls or bocce | 115 kcal | 230 kcal | 460 kcal |
Bowling, general | 105 kcal | 210 kcal | 420 kcal |
At 90 kg (198 lb), an hour of tenpin is about 340 kcal. With values of 3.0 to 3.8 METs, bowling sits at the low end of moderate activity, so most of your total comes from time at the lane, not from hard effort¹.
What Changes Your Burn at the Lanes
How many people share your lane. In tenpin you bowl one frame, then sit while everyone else bowls theirs. With two bowlers you are up often. With six, you spend much more of each game seated. That is why the calculator asks for your own minutes per game instead of guessing one.
Tenpin or lawn bowls. Lawn bowls adds walking, since players walk the length of the green after each end. In a study of four elite lawn bowlers at an international event, a match lasted about 1 hour 28 minutes and players covered about 2,100 m on foot up and down the green⁴. Even so, they spent about 62% of the match waiting⁴.
Long breaks. Food, drinks and waiting for a lane can add an hour with little movement. Use the split option to leave that time out.
What Studies Have Measured in Bowling
Few studies have measured bowling directly. A Japanese study fitted 13 untrained men with a portable oxygen meter while they bowled two games of tenpin³. They used 0.055 kcal per kg per minute, the lowest of all the sports in the study³. That works out to about 231 kcal per hour for a 70 kg person, close to the compendium values. The same men burned about 60% more per minute playing table tennis³.
For lawn bowls, the elite players above averaged a heart rate of 107 beats per minute, about 57% of their predicted maximum⁴. The researchers estimated about 260 kcal per match and rated the game as light to moderate, similar to golf⁴. No study we found has measured steps in tenpin bowling or the energy cost of lawn bowls in older club players.
Bowling Compared With Walking, Golf and Table Tennis
Calories for one hour of bowling and similar activities, based on the 2024 Adult Compendium¹:
Activity (code) | MET | 70 kg (154 lb) | 90 kg (198 lb) |
Tenpin at a bowling alley (15092) | 3.8 | 265 kcal | 340 kcal |
Lawn bowls or bocce (15465) | 3.3 | 230 kcal | 295 kcal |
Walking, 2.8 to 3.4 mph (17190) | 3.8 | 265 kcal | 340 kcal |
Golf, using a power cart (15290) | 3.5 | 245 kcal | 315 kcal |
Golf, walking, pulling clubs (15285) | 4.5 | 315 kcal | 405 kcal |
Table tennis (15660) | 4.0 | 280 kcal | 360 kcal |
Standing quietly (07040) | 1.3 | 90 kcal | 115 kcal |
An hour of tenpin matches an easy walk, sits a little below table tennis, and burns about three times as much as standing in a line. Walking golf is higher because you keep walking between shots.
A Note on Accuracy
Bowling is mostly short bursts of effort with sitting or standing in between, so your real burn depends on how much of the session you spend bowling. The compendium values are averages and do not say how many bowlers shared each lane. The one oxygen study of tenpin used only 13 untrained men, and the lawn bowls study had just four elite players, with an estimated, not measured, energy figure³ ⁴. Treat the result as a fair estimate for a typical session.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many calories do you burn bowling 3 games?
It depends on your weight and how long the games take. If each game takes you 15 minutes, a 70 kg (154 lb) bowler burns about 200 kcal over three games at the alley value¹.
How many calories does an hour of bowling burn?
About 265 kcal for a 70 kg (154 lb) adult at a tenpin alley, and about 340 kcal at 90 kg (198 lb)¹. Lawn bowls is a little lower, at about 230 kcal per hour for 70 kg¹.
Does Wii bowling burn calories?
A little. The compendium lists video game bowling at 2.3 METs, compared with 3.8 for real bowling at an alley, so a 70 kg player burns about 160 kcal in an hour of console bowling¹.
How accurate is a bowling calorie calculator?
It gives a reasonable average, but few studies have measured bowling directly. A measured value in untrained men, about 231 kcal per hour at 70 kg, landed close to the compendium values³.
