How Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR) Is Calculated
Two people can share the exact same waist measurement and carry very different health risk, simply because one of them is a foot taller. Waist-to-height ratio corrects for that by comparing your waist to your own height instead of to a fixed number, which is why researchers have pushed it as a simpler alternative to systems that need separate charts for men, women, and different body types.
What WHtR Measures
WHtR is a size-adjusted measurement. It asks a narrower question than a waist-to-hip comparison does, not where your fat sits relative to your hips, but whether your waist has grown large relative to your own frame.
The Formula
WHtR = Waist circumference ÷ Height (same unit for both)
This ratio was first shown to track abdominal fat closely in 1996, when it was tested directly against CT scan measurements¹.

A Note on Accuracy
