VO2 max is the maximum rate at which your body can use oxygen during intense exercise, and it’s one of the most widely used markers of cardiorespiratory fitness. This calculator offers two ways to estimate it without formal testing via an in-office treadmill test.
What This Calculator Measures
Both paths estimate VO2 max in milliliters of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute (ml/kg/min) based on differing measurements of fitness/activity, then compare that number against typical values for your age and sex.
The Walk Test Formula
This equation was developed and validated by Kline and colleagues at the University of Massachusetts using 343 adults aged 30 to 69, comparing predicted values against directly measured treadmill VO2 max¹.
VO2max = 132.853 − (0.0769 × weight in lb) − (0.3877 × age) + (6.318 × sex, 1 for male, 0 for female) − (3.2649 × 1-mile walk time in minutes) − (0.1565 × heart rate right after finishing)
This estimate is based on a formula that's been tested against directly measured VO2 max results and shown to be reliably accurate. For ages 18 to 24, we subtract 6 ml/kg/min from the result, since the original validation study found this adjustment gives a more accurate estimate for younger adults¹.
