How Body Frame Size Is Calculated

Body frame size is a rough classification, small, medium, or large, based on skeletal build rather than body weight. It's estimated here from wrist circumference, adjusted for height in women, using reference thresholds from the National Library of Medicine.

What This Calculator Measures

This estimates relative skeletal frame size, not body fat or muscle mass. Two people of the same height and weight can have different frame sizes, which is why some older weight tables adjusted their ranges by frame size.

The Formula

Frame size is determined by comparing wrist circumference against sex-specific thresholds. For women, the thresholds also vary by height¹:

Women, under 5'2": small under 5.5in, medium 5.5-5.75in, large over 5.75in

Women, 5'2" to 5'5": small under 6in, medium 6-6.25in, large over 6.25in

Women, over 5'5": small under 6.25in, medium 6.25-6.5in, large over 6.5in

Men: small 5.5-6.5in, medium 6.5-7.5in, large over 7.5in

How This Calculator Computes Your Result

Enter your sex, height, and wrist circumference (measured snugly at the wrist bone, where it bends). We compare your wrist measurement against the applicable threshold band and return your frame size category.

Why Men's Result Doesn't Change By Height

The reference source behind this calculator provides height-specific wrist circumference bands for women, but only a single set of bands for men regardless of height¹. Rather than inventing height adjustments for men that aren't in the underlying reference, this calculator reflects that limitation directly, height is collected for men for consistency with the women's flow, but it does not currently change the result.

A Note on Accuracy

Frame size from a single wrist measurement is a rough proxy, not a validated clinical measure of skeletal robustness, historically it was used mainly to adjust older ideal-body-weight tables. Measurement technique affects results, measure snugly at the wrist bone without compressing the skin, and take the reading on your dominant hand for consistency.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you measure your wrist for frame size?

Wrap a tape measure snugly around your wrist, right at the bony part where your hand meets your wrist, without pulling it tight enough to compress the skin.

Does frame size change with weight gain or loss?

No. Frame size reflects skeletal build, measured at the wrist bone, and does not meaningfully change with weight fluctuation.

Why does height matter for women but not men in this calculator?

The reference thresholds this calculator uses only break wrist circumference bands out by height for women, the source provides just one band for men regardless of height¹.

What is frame size actually used for?

Historically, it was used to adjust ideal body weight ranges on older height-weight tables. It's a rough skeletal-build classification, not a measure of health or fitness on its own.
