How Strength Level Is Calculated
Your entered 1RM is expressed as a ratio of body weight (1RM ÷ body weight), then located within percentile bands built from real competition results for squat, bench press, and deadlift specifically, not an estimated or invented table¹.
What This Calculator Measures
This ranks your one-rep max for squat, bench press, or deadlift against percentile data from actual competitive powerlifters of your sex and approximate age bracket. Overhead press uses a separate, less rigorously validated reference, since it isn't a competition lift in the same dataset.
The Formula
Bodyweight ratio = 1RM ÷ Body Weight
That ratio is compared against percentile bands (10th through 90th) built from squat, bench press, and deadlift competition results, stratified by sex and age bracket¹. Why This Data Is Different From a Typical “Strength Standards” Chart
Most strength-standard charts online are built from a mix of anecdote, gym-culture convention, and older, smaller datasets. This calculator instead draws on a 2024 study analyzing 809,986 competition entries from drug-tested, unequipped powerlifting competitions worldwide between 1968 and 2022¹.
That scale matters: it's large enough to report genuine percentiles by decile, separately for five age brackets and, in the original study, by weight class too. Those weight-class-specific bands aren't available in a free, publicly reusable form, though, so this calculator compares you by sex and age bracket only, not narrowed further by weight class.
The study also found relative strength declines non-linearly with body weight, heavier lifters need a lower bodyweight ratio to reach the same percentile than lighter lifters do, exactly the kind of nuance a weight-class breakdown would capture even more precisely than the age/sex bands this calculator actually uses¹.
